Fiji’s stock market has recorded its highest turnover in more than a decade, with year-to-date trading value reaching FJ$77.7 million by the end of July, a 166% increase on the same period last year and the highest level of market turnover recorded since 2015, according to reports in the Fijian media.

The South Pacific Stock Exchange, Fiji’s only licensed securities exchange, has been led since mid-2024 by Sri Lankan Sheraj Obeyesekere, who was appointed at 34 and remains among the youngest chief executives of a national stock exchange.

According to multiple reports, trading volume rose 191% to more than 42.6 million shares, while the total number of trades increased by nearly 65%. Market capitalisation has risen to FJ$4.05 billion, a 12.22% increase year-on-year and its highest level since January 2020.

2026 is the first year in the exchange’s history to record multi-product new listings. The onboarding of a new stockbroking firm by the exchange, the first stockbroker firm in 25 years, has expanded the market’s distribution capacity.

New investors entering the market as of July recording a 202% increase over the same period last year. New investor intake set records in two consecutive months in June and July, the highest monthly figures on record in Fiji. The majority are under 30, Fijian media reported.

Making comments to the Fijian media, Obeyesekere has noted the developments reflected the combined effort of listed companies, the licensed stockbroking firms, investment advisors and the Reserve Bank of Fiji, alongside the exchange’s own market development programme.
