A complaint has been lodged with the Moratuwa Police over the illegal posting of a locally produced Sinhala film on social media, with producers stressing that such acts amount to a criminal offence.

The Film Producers’ Association filed the complaint against an individual who had shared the movie of producer Janitha Marasinghe on Facebook and Telegram.

Association Chairman Rasitha Jinaseena told the media that piracy of this nature is not a minor violation but a crime, adding that if strict legal action is taken, the financial loss could be recovered from the offender.

Police said the suspect is an 18‑year‑old school student and a resident of Koralawewa.

By mutual agreement between both parties, the youth was given a stern warning and the matter was settled.

However, the Film Producers’ Association said that the association will work towards curbing film piracy and strengthening the laws to tackle the issue. (Newswire)
