The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says information has emerged that another group of Sri Lankans are being forcibly employed in cybercrime operations in Myanmar.
According to reports, the group had travelled on tourist visas in search of jobs but were instead coerced into cybercrime activities.
The area in question, located near the Thai–Myanmar border, is marked on Google Maps as a “Cyber Criminal Area.” It is situated about 25 kilometres from the city of Myawaddy and is under the control of an armed group.
Previously, several Sri Lankans who had been forced to work in the same region were rescued after significant efforts.
Authorities noted that young Sri Lankans, especially those seeking employment in the IT sector, are being lured abroad under the pretext of job opportunities and then trafficked into such operations on tourist visas. (Newswire)
