The Department of Wildlife Conservation says Sri Lankan tusker “Bathiya”, who was in critical condition, died this morning.
Tusker Bathiya was found lying on his side in a muddy pit in the Polpithigama area after suffering from gunshot injuries.
Of the three elephants being treated for gunshot injuries, Bathiya’s condition was considered the worst, as the tusker’s right front leg had gunshot injuries, limiting its movement.
Veterinary surgeons and wildlife officers, as well as police and army officers, have been working over the last few days to save the tusker’s life. (Newswire)
