Permanent restoration work on the Badulu Oya Irrigation Scheme, which was severely damaged by the Ditwah disaster, has reached its final stage following four months of intensive rehabilitation efforts.
The permanent reconstruction initiative was officially launched on June 5 under the patronage of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Minister Samantha Vidyaratne.
Following the initial disaster, authorities implemented temporary water distribution measures using sandbags in January, before commencing permanent repairs in June. Under the project, a 2km section of the main canal has been completely repaired and concrete lined.
A team led by Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Dinindu Saman Hennayake recently conducted a field visit to inspect the project’s progress.
Despite operating with a limited workforce, staff and engineers from the Irrigation Department managed to complete the large-scale reconstruction within four months.
The fully restored scheme feeds over 1,775 acres of farmland, offering a permanent solution to the water scarcity previously faced by local farmers. (Newswire)
