India has extended a grant of SL Rs.600 million for the construction of a new Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit at the District General Hospital in Mannar.
A Memorandum of Understanding for the project was signed in Colombo on September 9 by Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha and Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe. Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa was also present at the signing ceremony.
The initiative includes the construction of a two-storey A\&E unit and the procurement of medical equipment. Officials said the facility will fill a critical gap in emergency care in Mannar by enabling timely medical intervention during the golden hour and easing pressure on the hospital’s existing bed capacity.
The project adds to India’s portfolio of health sector cooperation in Sri Lanka, which includes the Suwa Seriya ‘1990’ ambulance service, support for hospitals in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Batticaloa, and the 150-bed multi-specialty hospital at Dickoya. New projects under consideration include expanding the ambulance service and building a four-storey ward complex at Mullaitivu. (Newswire)
