Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has expressed his condolences following the death of cricketer Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga Wellalage, describing him as a proud father who raised a son admired by the entire nation.

In a heartfelt message, Jayasuriya said the late Suranga Wellalage, a cricketer himself, instilled in his son the values and love for the game that continue to shine through Dunith. “Your father was a cricketer himself and he can be proud of the son he raised. His love for the game lives on through you. I know how strong you are, and I have no doubt you will continue to make him proud by winning many games for Sri Lanka,” Jayasuriya said.

The head coach also assured Dunith of his support during this difficult moment. “Please remember you are not alone. I will be there for you like a father — guiding you, standing with you, and supporting you every step of the way. The entire team, the nation, and everyone who loves this sport are by your side,” he said.

Jayasuriya added that the tragedy underscores how much Sri Lankans value cricket, noting that the sport is not just a game but a family that comes together in both joy and sorrow. (Newswire)
