Ireland has announced a ban on Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich from entering the country, citing their conduct and statements related to the conflict in Gaza.
In a statement issued on June 5, Ireland’s Justice Ministry said Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan had instructed immigration officials to refuse entry to the two Israeli ministers should they seek to enter Ireland.
The move follows criticism of comments made by Ben Gvir regarding pro-Palestinian activists detained by Israeli forces after participating in a Gaza-bound aid flotilla.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin had earlier indicated that Ireland would take action against Israeli officials considered to be contributing to tensions and conflict in Gaza.
Ben Gvir and Smotrich, both key members of Israel’s far-right governing coalition, have faced increasing international criticism over their remarks and policies relating to Palestinians and the ongoing war in Gaza.
Ireland has been among the most outspoken European countries in its criticism of Israel’s conduct during the conflict and has repeatedly called for stronger international action to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza. (Newswire)
