Sri Lanka’s railway trade unions have announced a 48-hour strike on September 17 and 18, citing ongoing administrative issues within the Railways Department.
The unions said the strike will centre on two key demands: the removal of the General Manager of Railways and an end to disciplinary action being taken against a trade union leader.
The unions have accused the railway administration of contributing to a deterioration of the service, pointing to train delays and cancellations, overcrowding, inadequate services, declining passenger facilities and concerns over operational efficiency.
They warned that all railway trade unions are prepared to take joint trade union action if a satisfactory solution is not provided.
