A 28-year-old man was shot dead by police in Welikanda, Polonnaruwa, after he allegedly obstructed the duties of police officers and attempted to attack them with a sharp weapon, police said.
According to the Police Media Spokesperson, the incident occurred after three suspects riding a motorcycle ignored orders to stop at a police roadblock. The suspects later sped to a nearby residence in the Welikanda area.
Police said that when officers attempted to apprehend the suspects, they were obstructed in the execution of their duties and came under threat, as one of the suspects allegedly tried to attack the officers with a sharp weapon. In response, police fired shots, fatally wounding one suspect.
The deceased, identified as a 28-year-old male, was pronounced dead following the shooting. The other suspects fled the scene, and a search operation has been launched to apprehend them.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, under the supervision of Sri Lanka Police, while further legal procedures are being carried out in accordance with the law. (Newswire)
