Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara inspected the Anuradhapura Prison on Wednesday, visiting several sections of the facility and assessing the needs and welfare of inmates.
During the visit, the minister inspected the women’s section, prison kitchen and areas where remand suspects are being held. He also addressed inmates at the open prison camp.
The visit coincided with the establishment of a new joint emergency response mechanism at the Anuradhapura Prison, aimed at improving coordination among state agencies during emergencies and strengthening inmate welfare.
The government plans to establish similar mechanisms at prisons across the country, bringing together the Department of Prisons, Police, armed forces, health authorities and other relevant state institutions.
