The number of dengue patients reported across Sri Lanka has surged to 49,000, with health authorities warning that the public has yet to grasp the seriousness of the threat.
Speaking to the media, Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, said the situation remains critical, stressing that community awareness and active participation are essential to curb the spread.
He further said that 47 complaints have already been received through the Dengue Operations Room, underscoring the scale of public concern.
The Operations Room can be contacted via 0117 966 366, operating from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm on weekdays and 8.00 am to 12.00 noon on Saturdays. The hotline is available for reporting mosquito breeding sites, obtaining outbreak information, and seeking guidance on prevention measures.
Meanwhile, a three‑day nationwide dengue control programme commenced on Thursday (24) and will continue until Friday (June 26).
The initiative is being implemented across 600 Grama Niladhari divisions, targeting high‑risk areas with coordinated clean‑up and prevention measures as authorities intensify efforts during the southwest monsoon season. (Newswire)
