The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) marked a milestone for grassroots sports on Saturday, laying the foundation stone for a new “FIFA Arena” mini pitch in Negombo.

The project is part of a global initiative by FIFA, the sport’s international governing body, which aims to install more than 1,000 mini pitches worldwide over the next two years to increase inclusive access to football.

Sri Lanka is one of only three Asian nations selected for the program’s pilot phase. The country has been allocated two pitches under the scheme: one in Kotte and this latest installation in Negombo.

Deputy Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Sugath Tilakaratna officially laid the stone during a ceremony attended by FFSL President Jaswar Umar, the Mayor of Negombo, and various members of Parliament.

“This facility is about more than just sport,” FFSL officials said in a statement. “It is about providing underprivileged children and students a safe, modern environment to develop.”

The project’s objectives extend beyond the pitch. Local authorities hope the arena will serve as a community hub to promote healthy lifestyles and discipline, specifically targeting the prevention of drug addiction among local youth by fostering leadership and sportsmanship.

Construction is expected to move quickly, with a completion date set for March. Once finished, the facility will be handed over to the public, providing a long-term resource for the children of Negombo and its surrounding areas. (Newswire)
