The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has issued an amber advisory for severe lightning valid until 11:30 p.m. today (30).
According to the department, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely in the Uva and Eastern provinces, as well as the Mullaittivu, Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts. Temporary localized strong winds are also expected during thundershowers.
The Department of Meteorology urges the public to take precautions to minimize damage, advising people to seek indoor shelter rather than standing under trees, avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies, refrain from using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances, avoid open vehicles like bicycles, tractors and boats and stay vigilant for fallen trees and power lines.
