Another seven Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have arrived at the Colombo Port under the national project to strengthen grid stability and provide consumers with a more reliable electricity supply, Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena announced.

The new systems are to be installed near transmission substations in Panadura, Beliatta, Hambantota, Ampara, Vavunativu, Valachchenai, and Mahiyanganaya.

Together, they will add an energy storage capacity of 280 MWh, enabling 70 MW of power to be supplied to the national grid.

Earlier in June, eight BESS units were imported and are currently being installed.

Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena said that by the end of July, they are expected to contribute 80 MW to the grid.

The Deputy Minister added that the project marks another important step in integrating renewable energy, strengthening energy security, and ensuring a more stable and dependable electricity supply for the public. (Newswire)
