Above 50 mm of rain expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today

The Department of Meteorology says rain is expected in several provinces today, with heavy falls above 50 mm expected in some places. 

Showers will occur at times in the Central, Uva, Eastern provinces and in the Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts. 

Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely in some places in the Uva province and in the Ampara, Batticaloa, Nuwara Eliya, Matale and Polonnaruwa districts.

Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern province and in the Anuradhapura district.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 2.00 pm.

Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely in some places in the Sabaragamuwa province, and in the Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, Showers may occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil via Trincomalee. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island in the evening or night.

Winds will be north-easterly, and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 45-50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalutara to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Kalutara to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil, will be fairly rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be moderate.
