Husband arrested over petrol attack on wife in Angoda

Police have arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with an incident in which a woman was set on fire using petrol.

The suspect, a resident of Angoda, Meegahawatta, was taken into custody in the Mulleriyawa police division on Tuesday (22).

According to police, the incident occurred on the 18th at around 5.30 p.m., when the suspect arrived by three-wheeler and allegedly poured petrol on the woman before setting her on fire and fleeing the scene.

The victim was admitted to hospital immediately and is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the National Hospital, Colombo. Hospital sources said she remains in a critical condition with severe burn injuries to her face and chest.

Police said a statement has already been recorded from the victim. Initial investigations indicate that the suspect is her husband.

Based on information provided by the suspect, a petrol bottle allegedly used in the incident and the three-wheeler were taken into police custody.

Police said the suspect has admitted responsibility during questioning, adding that he has made statements relating to personal disputes, which are being examined as part of the investigation.

He is due to be produced before the Hulsdorph Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (24). (NewsWire)
