Excavations at a mass grave discovered within the Colombo Port premises have uncovered skeletal remains belonging to at least 88 individuals, officials confirmed.

The grave was first found in July 2024 during construction work for the new elevated expressway. Excavations are being carried out under the supervision of Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Disanayake, with archaeological expertise provided by senior professor Raj Somadeva.

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara recently said that Sri Lanka has so far recorded 17 mass grave sites across the country.(Newswire)
