Sri Lanka Police have reminded motorists that digital motor insurance cards can be used as proof of valid vehicle insurance, eliminating the need to carry a physical insurance certificate.
The Police Media Division said Digital Motor Insurance Cards have been accepted since May 1, 2026, following arrangements made with the Sri Lanka Insurance Regulatory Commission, the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka and other relevant stakeholders.
The facility also applies to insurance policies issued through the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board, with digital insurance cards available from July 20, 2026.
Motorists insured through private insurance companies can obtain their Digital Motor Insurance Card from the relevant insurer. Depending on the insurance company, the card can be obtained through its mobile application, using a QR code or URL provided by the insurer, or through other digital platforms.
Policyholders who require a physical document can also obtain a printed insurance certificate from their insurance company.
For Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board policies, policyholders can obtain the Digital Motor Insurance Card through the board, while a printed certificate can also be obtained where required.
Police said motorists can present the digital card on their mobile phone when requested by police or other authorised officials. Insurance details can be verified through the National Insurance Verification System, including by scanning the QR code on the digital card.
Motorists can also check the active status of their insurance policy through the USSD services *1338# and *1918#, police said.
The *1338# service allows motorists to check their insurance status using details from the policy, while *1918# can be used to verify a policy using its policy number. (Newswire)
