
A decision has been taken to grant a special presidential pardon to 49 prisoners in view of the 78th National Independence Day, which falls on Feb. 4.
The pardon is being granted under powers vested in the president in accordance with Article 34 of the Constitution.
The Department of Prisons said inmates currently serving sentences will receive a remission of one week for each year already served.
It said the remaining portions of sentences will also be waived for prisoners who are incarcerated solely for failing to pay fines of less than 75,000 rupees. (NewsWire)
