The Select Committee of Parliament tasked with conducting a comprehensive study on Sri Lanka’s lack of preparedness to face Cyclone Ditwah has questioned senior officials of the Sri Lanka Police and a former Member of Parliament.
The committee, chaired by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, met recently at Parliament to review the disaster response.
A group of Senior Superintendents of Police and Superintendents of Police from districts affected by the cyclone were summoned to provide testimony on their role during the emergency.
Former MP Nimal Piyatissa was also called before the committee to elaborate on comments he had made to the media regarding the measures taken at the time of the cyclone.
Members of Parliament serving on the committee participated in the session, which forms part of a broader inquiry aimed at identifying shortcomings in disaster preparedness and developing recommendations to strengthen future response mechanisms.
The committee is expected to submit its findings and proposals to Parliament once the study is complete. (Newswire)
