Independent five-room boutique manor in Sri Lanka’s deep south gains prestigious international recognition

Maya Tangalle, the intimate luxury boutique manor located in Sri Lanka’s southern coastal region, has been officially selected for inclusion in the MICHELIN Guide 2026, marking an important milestone for the independent hospitality property and further strengthening Sri Lanka’s presence within the international luxury travel landscape.

The selection places Maya Tangalle within the MICHELIN Guide’s curated international hotel collection, with the property also receiving its own dedicated listing on the official MICHELIN Guide hotel platform.

Set amidst tranquil paddy fields in Tangalle, Maya Tangalle is an intimate five-room, 19th-century colonial manor distinguished by its architecture, privacy, highly personalised hospitality and strong sense of place. The property was sensitively restored by celebrated Sri Lankan architect Channa Daswatte, seamlessly blending its historic character with contemporary elegance. These distinctive qualities are also highlighted within Maya Tangalle’s official MICHELIN Guide listing.

Hotels included within the MICHELIN Guide selection are assessed against five universal criteria: connection to the destination, excellence in architecture and design, quality of service, authenticity and character of the location, and value for money.

For Maya Tangalle, whose philosophy has always centred on creating an intimate and highly individual guest experience, the recognition represents an important endorsement of the property’s distinctive approach to luxury hospitality.

Unlike larger conventional resorts, Maya Tangalle has deliberately retained the intimacy of its five-room format. Guests experience individually designed accommodation, carefully curated art, tropical gardens overlooking surrounding paddy fields, personalised dining experiences and access to a range of cultural, wellness and nature-based activities across Sri Lanka’s southern region.

The property’s approach to gastronomy similarly draws on the flavours and traditions of Sri Lanka while introducing guests to carefully curated contemporary dining experiences. From traditional Southern Sri Lankan cuisine and experiential dining in the surrounding landscape to wellness, nature and cultural encounters, Maya Tangalle has positioned itself as a destination for travellers seeking a more meaningful and individual interpretation of luxury.

The MICHELIN Guide 2026 selection gives Maya Tangalle further international credibility among discerning travellers and supports its positioning as a highly personalised boutique hospitality experience rooted firmly in its destination.

The official designation is “Selected in the MICHELIN Guide 2026.” The selection is distinct from the separate One, Two and Three MICHELIN Key distinctions awarded to certain hotels within the wider MICHELIN hotel selection.

For Maya Tangalle, however, inclusion itself represents a meaningful new chapter in the story of an independent Sri Lankan manor that has built its identity around authenticity, design, intimate service and the quiet beauty of Tangalle.

From a quiet manor in Tangalle to the MICHELIN Guide — Maya Tangalle now takes its place within the MICHELIN Guide 2026 international hotel selection.
