Sri Lanka’s Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa strongly condemned Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza, describing it as a “genocide against the Palestinian people” and a grave violation of international law.

Speaking in Parliament, Premadasa said Israel’s military actions, including the bombing of hospitals and restrictions on food supplies, amounted to state terrorism targeting children, mothers, and civilians. He stressed that such actions must be denounced by all who stand for human rights.

Premadasa accused Israel of violating United Nations General Assembly Resolutions 241 and 338, which call for a two-state solution to the conflict, and said the assault on Gaza was aimed at eliminating that possibility. He also expressed condolences over the large-scale civilian casualties, calling the situation a tragedy.

The opposition leader recalled the long history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, from its beginnings in 1948 to multiple wars in 1956, 1967, 1973, and 1978, and noted that despite global consensus for a two-state solution, Israel’s actions had undermined peace efforts.

“This is not just a political issue—it is a humanitarian crisis. We must not be afraid to take a clear stance for human rights,” Premadasa told Parliament. (Newswire)
