President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the government plans to replace its ageing vehicle fleet after spending nearly Rs. 25 billion on repairing government vehicles in 2025.

Addressing the National Trade Union Conference, the President said maintaining outdated vehicles had become a significant financial burden on the state.

He said the government had developed plans to introduce a new vehicle fleet as part of a broader programme to modernise the public sector and improve efficiency.

The President also announced plans to replace outdated computer systems with modern digital infrastructure across government institutions.

Under the digital transformation programme, new applications and online systems will be introduced to allow the public to access selected government services from home without visiting government offices.

President Dissanayake said the government was also reviewing existing state institutions, noting that some had become outdated and no longer served their original purposes.

He explained that certain institutions would need to be closed, merged or restructured, while new institutions would be established to meet emerging economic and technological requirements.

The President stressed that modernising public institutions was essential to improving productivity, reducing inefficiencies and strengthening public service delivery.

He also called on public sector employees and trade unions to support the government’s reform programme, saying their involvement would be essential to successfully implementing the changes. (Newswire)
