Amnesty presses Sri Lanka for Transparency in Chemmani Mass Grave Probe

Excavations at the suspected second Chemmani mass grave site in Siththuppaththi, Jaffna, have so far uncovered 19 human skeletons, marking a significant development in the long-delayed search for truth and justice over alleged extrajudicial killings during Sri Lanka’s civil war.

Northern journalist Kumanan Kanapathippillai reported that the Judicial Medical Officer leading the investigation has requested a 45-day extension and was directed by the court to submit a cost estimate for the next phase.

In addition, suspicious nearby areas identified via satellite imagery by Professor Raj Somadeva were filmed by drone, and the footage has been handed over to him for further analysis.

The next phase of the excavation is scheduled to begin on June 26.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International has urged Sri Lankan authorities to ensure the excavation is conducted in line with international standards. Their call includes three key demands: allocating sufficient resources, maintaining transparency with access for families and media, and securing the integrity of the site. (Newswire)
