Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today participated in the donation of medical equipment worth Rs. 2.8 million to the Aralaganwila Regional Hospital in Polonnaruwa under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s “Husma” program.
The donated medical supplies included five patient monitors, one syringe pump, and one infusion pump.
Addressing the event, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said the government has no vision, program, or roadmap to rebuild the country, and instead is focused on abolishing democratic rights.
He stressed that the government’s responsibility is not to undermine democracy but to bring relief to the motherland struck by disaster and to strengthen people’s lives with a new journey. However, judging by the actions taken so far, such an effort is not visible.
Premadasa noted that before Cyclone Ditwah, agriculture, services, and industries contributed to building the economy, but these sectors have suffered severe impacts since the disaster.
He emphasized that strengthening affected communities without weakening their services is vital for economic growth, and if the government fails to provide relief to these sectors and self‑employed individuals, the entire economic process will be disrupted, harming the country.
He said that for food security, economic growth, exports, production, and tourism, relief and strength must be provided to all those affected. Otherwise, their contribution to national economic growth will be diminished.
The Opposition Leader stressed that the government’s duty is to provide relief to the rightful beneficiaries without being trapped in bureaucracy, pointing out that this should be a top priority in national policy.
He added that currently, the government is searching for reasons to avoid delivering promised aid to those whose homes, property, and businesses were damaged, which is unacceptable. Promised relief must be delivered as pledged, he stressed. (Newswire)
