The Department of Meteorology has warned the Naval and fishing communities not to venture into the sea areas around Sri Lanka, from today (26) until further notice.

According to the Department, the low-pressure area south of Sri Lanka is likely to intensify into a depression during the next 24 hours and move north-northwestwards.

The rainy and windy conditions on the island are expected to enhance in the next few days due to the influence of this system.

As such, showers or thundershowers will occur at times over most parts of the island. Very heavy falls above 150 mm are likely at some places in Eastern, Central, Northcentral and Uva provinces. Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely in some places in the other areas of the island.

Strong winds of about 50-60 kmph can be expected at times over Northern, Northcentral, North-western, Western and Eastern provinces and in Hambantota and Matale districts. Fairly strong winds of about 40 kmph may occur at times in other areas over the island.

Meanwhile, due to the influence of the low-pressure system, wind speed can increase up to 60-70 kmph in sea areas around the island, and the sea areas can be very rough at times. Very heavy showers or thundershowers are likely in the sea areas around the island. (Newswire)
