The Cabinet has approved the commencement of regulated tourism activities at Nil Diya Pokuna under the supervision of the Department of Wildlife Conservation, recognizing the site as a rare natural resource that requires protection.

Nil Diya Pokuna, located within an underground cave complex in the Ravana Ella Sanctuary in the Karandagolla Grama Niladhari Division of the Ella Divisional Secretariat in Badulla District, is considered a rare natural water source.

The site has become a popular destination among local and foreign tourists due to its distinctive geological features.

A technical committee comprising university academics and representatives of relevant state institutions was appointed to study the site and make recommendations on its management, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Based on the committee’s study report, regulations were prepared to govern tourism activities at Nil Diya Pokuna. The regulations have been reviewed and cleared by the Legal Draftsman.

Cabinet has now approved a proposal presented by the Environment Minister to publish the regulations in the Gazette under the provisions of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance.

The move will allow tourism activities at the site to operate under the supervision and regulation of the Department of Wildlife Conservation while ensuring the conservation of the natural site. (Newswire)
