Treasury scam involved impersonation, not direct hack : Deputy Minister

Digital Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne says the reported Treasury cyber fraud appears to be more of a sophisticated phishing and impersonation scam than a direct system hack.

He said fraudsters allegedly created a fake domain and email addresses resembling the international company involved, using names similar to actual officials to mislead authorities into making payments.

Weeraratne said investigations are ongoing with multiple agencies, including the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team, Central Bank of Sri Lanka and other state institutions, to trace where the money went and identify those responsible.

He added that authorities remain hopeful of recovering the funds through the banking trail left by the transaction.  (Newswire)
