The Cabinet has approved a proposal for Sri Lanka and China to enter into a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on immigration regulatory cooperation.
The agreement will be signed between Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration and China’s National Immigration Administration.
According to the Cabinet decision, the MoU is aimed at strengthening cooperation on visas, immigration and emigration, including facilitating travel for officials and citizens engaged in business, investment, tourism, scientific and technical activities.
It will also provide for the exchange of official information and intelligence and closer cooperation against organised crime linked to human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
The agreement also envisages training workshops and capacity-building programmes for immigration officials of the two countries.
Clearance for the draft MoU has been obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism and the Attorney General. (Newswire)
