The Government has decided to declare Wednesdays as a holiday for government offices, schools, universities and courts in view of the current fuel situation in the country.
Commissioner General of Essential Services said the measure will come into effect from March 18, 2026, and will apply to all government institutions, including judicial services and state-run educational institutions.
Authorities also announced that all government events will be suspended until further notice as part of measures aimed at reducing travel and fuel consumption.
The Commissioner General further requested private sector institutions to consider following the same arrangement.
However, essential services including the health sector, ports, water supply and customs will not be included in the special holiday.
The decision was taken after taking into consideration the prevailing fuel situation in the country, officials said. (Newswire)
