The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (22) issued a warrant to arrest and produce former Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States Jaliya Wickramasuriya, who failed to appear in connection with an investigation into alleged misuse of government funds.
The case relates to the purchase of an embassy office building during Wickramasuriya’s tenure, where he is accused of misappropriating approximately USD 332,000.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the court that the suspect is currently residing in the United States and is evading proceedings.
Magistrate Pasan Amarasena issued the warrant after considering CID submissions. Bail guarantors, who appeared in court today following earlier notices, were cautioned by the Magistrate.
Investigating officers told court that the matter has been referred to the Attorney General for advice.
The Magistrate ordered the case to be recalled on December 9 for further submissions based on the Attorney General’s instructions. (Newswire)
