A low-floor priority bus service will be launched as a pilot project from April 21, operating from the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre, under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake.

The programme, introduced in line with the government’s vision of ensuring equal opportunities and human dignity for all, has an allocation of Rs. 430.7 million and is being implemented under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative.

In the first phase, 10 modern air-conditioned low-floor buses will be deployed, specially designed to be easily accessible for wheelchair users and other differently abled passengers. Each bus can carry 80 passengers at a time and includes 33 seats, along with specialised safety features for passenger protection.

The buses will operate between Makumbura and Pettah, and Makumbura and Kadawatha, with services running every 40 minutes during morning and evening peak hours.

The route network will also cover key healthcare centres, including Maharagama Apeksha Hospital and the National Hospital of Colombo. (NewsWire)
