The National People’s Power (NPP) has the right to form the administration of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), as the party has obtained the highest number of seats, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Responding to the Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB), claims on appointing a Mayor, Minister Jayatissa revealed that the mayoral candidate of the SJB had lost the Local Government Election.
“We will take the necessary measures to form a council at the CMC,” Minister Jayatissa added, addressing the post-Cabinet media briefing held today.
Meanwhile, SJB Deputy Secretary MP Mujibur Rahman acknowledged the loss of the party’s CMC mayoral candidate, Ruvaiz Haniffa, in the 2025 Local Government Elections.
Addressing the media, MP Mujibur Rahman said the SJB will take steps to appoint another candidate as the CMC Mayor.
“The CMC Mayor will be chosen through a secret ballot under the Local Government voting system. Discussions are underway with 69 elected members, including other parties, to form a council under the SJB at the CMC,” he revealed.
MP Rahman further expressed confidence that the SJB will win the secret ballot and appoint the CMC’s Mayor. (Newswire)
