Sri Lanka has called for the immediate de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East and West Asia, expressing deep concern over the rapidly worsening situation in the region.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism said the escalating conflict poses a direct threat to civilians and has already resulted in the tragic loss of lives.

Sri Lanka condemned attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, stressing that the protection of civilians on all sides is a fundamental obligation under international humanitarian law.

The Government said it is closely monitoring developments in view of the grave humanitarian crisis and the potential impact on the global economy and international trade, which could affect countries worldwide.

Sri Lanka also reiterated the need to respect the principles of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

Emphasising its commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, Sri Lanka urged all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and return to negotiations to prevent further escalation.

The Government further called on all sides to engage in meaningful dialogue and take decisive steps to reduce tensions and safeguard peace and stability in the region and beyond. (Newswire)
