The Sri Lanka Navy has begun supplying drinking water to ponies on Delft Island in Jaffna as prolonged dry conditions have depleted natural water sources.
The programme was launched on Aug. 21 by the Northern Naval Command, with SLNS Vasaba providing water to ponies in the Vellai area in the western part of the island.
The Navy said the initiative is being carried out under the national Clean Sri Lanka programme to help protect biodiversity on Delft Island.
Dry weather in the Jaffna District has caused water shortages for wildlife, including the island’s pony population, a well-known attraction among local and foreign visitors.
Meanwhile, the Navy said it continues to provide drinking water to communities in the Jaffna District through reverse osmosis plants established across the islands. (Newswire)
