The mother of Sri Lankan migrant worker Sivarasa Anojan, who has reportedly been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia, has appealed to the Sri Lankan government and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to bring him back safely to the country.
According to reports, the Saudi Arabian Appellate Court has issued a death sentence against Anojan over a Facebook comment deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.
Sri Lanka is pursuing both legal and diplomatic efforts to assist him, with officials confirming that discussions are underway to file an appeal while simultaneously seeking clemency from the Saudi government.
Earlier this week, addressing the post-Cabinet media briefing, Cabinet spokesman, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that the government was consulting Anojan’s family about lodging an appeal and simultaneously exploring diplomatic options, including a royal pardon or a reduction of his sentence.
