Chief Epidemiologist Dr Palitha Karunapema says cases of viral meningitis have been reported among schoolchildren in several parts of the country, while assuring the public that there is no need for unnecessary panic.

Speaking to the media, Dr Karunapema said the illness, first identified in Deniyaya, has now been reported from several other areas including Diyatalawa, Welimada and Rikillagaskada.

According to him, around 28 cases have been reported from Diyatalawa, 13 from Welimada and 25 from Rikillagaskada.

“This is a viral meningitis condition and the Epidemiology Unit together with provincial health authorities have already carried out the necessary investigations and response measures,” he said.

Dr Karunapema said the disease had mainly spread among schoolchildren and that common symptoms included high fever, headaches and vomiting.

“Almost all patients have sought hospital treatment and the illness generally recovers within five to seven days with proper treatment. Therefore, the public should not create unnecessary fear over the situation,” he said.

He also urged the public to remain cautious during the ongoing rainy weather and Vesak season, warning that the disease could spread through contaminated food and water.

“We request the public to follow proper health practices and maintain hygiene. Necessary steps have already been taken to control the spread of the disease and all patients are receiving proper treatment. None of the patients reported so far are in serious condition,” Dr Karunapema said.

He added that health officials were coordinating closely with schools to minimise further spread of the illness among students. (Newswire)
