A peaceful protest calling for justice for the Chemmani mass grave in Jaffna entered its third day today.

The peaceful protest, titled ‘Unfading glow’, is organized by the People’s Action Movement, led by Attorney Vaishnavi Shanmuganathan.

According to the Jaffna Police, the peaceful protest is being staged near the Jaffna entrance, close to the Chemmani area.

Several religious leaders, political leaders, political dignitaries, representatives of civil organisations and members of the public have participated in the protest.

The mass grave was detected after workers from the Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha discovered fragments of human bones on 20 February while clearing land for a construction project.

Thereafter, excavation at Sittupatthu in Chemmani, Jaffna, began on 15 May following a court directive.

Based on a report submitted by the Jaffna Police, Jaffna Magistrate A. Ananda Rajah ordered an official excavation. The work is being carried out by a team of archaeologists led by Professor Raj Somadeva.

As of 08 June, 19 human skeletons were found at the site. The next phase of the excavation is scheduled to begin tomorrow (26 June). (Newswire)
