MP Namal Rajapaksa warned that the government could jail him before the 12th if it expects a large crowd to gather in Anuradhapura that day.

“If the government realises that a large crowd will come to Anuradhapura on the 12th, they may even put Namal Rajapaksa behind bars before then,” he said speaking to reporters.

Rajapaksa’s comments follow recent claims by the Sri Lanka Podujana Paramus (SLPP) that the government’s decision to launch a series of islandwide rallies led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake from September 5 is a response to the growing political momentum created by the SLPP rallies.

MP Namal Rajapaksa accused the government of suppressing opposition voices, saying it was attempting to conceal its own weaknesses. (Newswire)
