Supermarket fined Rs.200,000 for selling expired food items

The Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court has fined an outlet of a popular supermarket chain in Haldummulla Rs. 200,000 after it pleaded guilty to selling expired food products, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.

The case was filed by investigators from the CAA’s Badulla District Office following a special inspection that found expired biscuits, chocolates and cashew nuts displayed for sale.

The prosecution was instituted under the provisions of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.

When the case was taken up on Wednesday (08), the defendant admitted the offence, following which the Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court imposed a fine of Rs. 200,000. (Newswire)
