Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath says a proposal has been made to the Chinese government to establish charging stations for electric vehicles across Sri Lanka.

In a post on social media, Minister Herath said the request was made during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.

According to the Foreign Minister, the Chinese Ambassador stated that following the damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah, the Chinese government expects to assess the situation and discuss the assistance it can provide in all relevant areas.

Minister Herath further said that it was pointed out that the government expects urgent support from China to repair railway lines and bridges destroyed by flooding, and the Ambassador agreed to immediately draw the attention of the Chinese government to this matter.

“In addition, since Sri Lanka is increasingly importing electric vehicles from China and other global markets, I proposed focusing on setting up charging stations across the country. I also highlighted that this would be an important step as the government plans to import more electric buses in the future,” he said.

Minister Herath added that the Chinese Ambassador positively accepted this proposal and agreed to inform the Chinese government about it. (Newswire)
