Above 50 mm of rain expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in most parts of Sri Lanka after 2.00 pm today (18), according to the Department of Meteorology.

As such, fairly heavy showers above 50 mm can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Uva provinces and in the Anuradhapura district. 

A few showers may occur over the eastern coastal areas during the morning. 

Misty conditions can be expected in some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura and the Kalutara districts in the morning.

Meanwhile, showers may occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Hambantota via Batticaloa. 

Showers or thundershowers are likely at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle during the evening or night. 

Winds will be South-easterly or variable in direction. Wind speed will be 20-30 kmph. 

The sea areas around the island will be slight. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
