Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has urged Saudi Arabian authorities to show mercy if a reported death sentence against Sri Lankan migrant worker Anojan Sivarasa is confirmed.
In a post on X, Premadasa said a person’s life should not be taken “for a word” and appealed to Saudi authorities to keep the possibility of clemency open.
Premadasa said a religion that has endured for centuries “cannot be diminished by a perceived insult” and argued that its strength should not depend on taking a life in response to a word.
He also expressed hope that Saudi Arabia would show what he described as “the mercy that lies at the heart of every great faith.”
Premadasa’s comments come amid reports concerning the alleged death sentence handed to Sivarasa, a Sri Lankan migrant worker in Saudi Arabia. (Newswire)
