Fuel allowance revision led to increase in MPs’ earnings, not salaries: Deputy Minister

Deputy Minister of Economic Development Nishantha Jayaweera said that the salaries of Members of Parliament have not been increased, clarifying that any increase in their monthly earnings is due to an adjustment of the fuel allowance in line with current fuel prices.

Speaking in Parliament, he said the Government had revised the fuel allowance paid to public officials who are entitled to it after the country’s economic situation improved.

“As a result, all public officials receiving a fuel allowance have seen an increase in their monthly payments. Members of Parliament have also received a corresponding increase through the revised fuel allowance,” he said.

The Deputy Minister stressed that MPs’ basic salaries had not been increased. (Newswire)
