Sri Lanka records 122 drowning deaths so far in 2026

Sri Lanka has already recorded 122 drowning deaths in 2026, according to Police data.

Addressing the media, Police Spokesman F.U. Wootler said that 113 men and 9 women are among those reported dead. 

He further revealed that 595 deaths were reported in 2024, including 510 men and 85 women, while 376 deaths were reported in 2025, including 309 men and 67 women.

The Police Spokesman said that in total, 1,093 lives have been lost to drowning between 2024 and 2026, many of them youths.

He urged parents and elders to remain vigilant, particularly during holidays and the upcoming Poson festival, stressing the importance of keeping a close watch on children and young people near water. (Newswire)
