Further details have emerged over the police shooting in Narahenpita reported earlier, with investigations revealing that the incident was linked to a love affair involving a young woman who was allegedly abducted from a graduation ceremony in Colombo.
As previously reported, Police opened fire at a car in Narahenpita after its driver allegedly ignored repeated orders to stop at a police roadblock.
Police investigations have now revealed that the young woman inside the vehicle had allegedly been abducted by her boyfriend from the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), where she had arrived with family members for the University of Colombo’s Sri Palee Campus graduation ceremony.
Police received information at around 1.30 p.m. that a young woman was being taken away in a car and subsequently attempted to intercept the vehicle as it travelled from Narahenpita towards Nawala.
The driver allegedly ignored repeated police orders to stop, prompting officers to open fire at the vehicle on the Narahenpita-Nawala Road.
The driver later abandoned the car and fled, while Police found the young woman inside the vehicle.
Further investigations identified the driver as her boyfriend. The two are reportedly residents of Weligama and Midigama in the Matara District.
According to information received by Police, the woman had travelled to Colombo for the graduation ceremony without informing her boyfriend. Her father had alerted Police after she was allegedly taken away.
Investigations have also revealed an unusual detail surrounding the vehicle: Police say the car belongs to the boyfriend, but the woman’s father had reportedly used it to bring the family to the graduation ceremony.
The vehicle has been taken to the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station, while the woman was produced before the Colombo Judicial Medical Officer.
Operations are underway to arrest him, while further investigations continue. (Newswire)
