The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow-level warning for heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm in several areas across 14 districts of Sri Lanka.
The warning, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, is effective from 5.00 p.m. today (November 7) until 1.00 a.m. tomorrow (November 8).
The affected districts include Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Kandy, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla and Monaragala.
In the Colombo District, heavy rainfall is expected in Avissawella, Homagama, Kaduwela, Kesbewa, Kolonnawa and Maharagama.
The warning also covers several areas in Gampaha and Kalutara districts, while all Divisional Secretariat divisions in Kegalle and Ratnapura districts have been identified as potentially affected.
According to the Meteorology Department, the expected rainfall could result in localized flooding of roads and residential areas, reduced visibility, isolated rockfalls and disruptions to transport services.
Minor travel delays and temporary interruptions to utilities and other services are also possible.
Residents in low-lying areas, river basins and landslide-prone locations have been advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor official weather updates.
Motorists have also been urged to exercise caution, particularly when travelling through hilly areas.
The warning comes following heavy rainfall that caused flooding and traffic disruptions in several parts of Colombo on Friday evening. (Newswire)
