21-year-old arrested for allegedly defrauding woman of Rs. 6.6 million in overseas job scam

A 21-year-old suspect has been arrested by the North Western Province Unit of the Computer Crime Investigation Division for allegedly defrauding a woman of Rs. 6,365,000 by promising overseas employment opportunities.

Police said the suspect had convinced the victim, a 28-year-old woman from Kurukupane, Bangadeniya, to transfer money through online banking services.

A complaint regarding the incident was received on June 27, 2025, and subsequent investigations led officers to identify the suspect as a resident of Ampilanthurai.

The suspect was arrested on the evening of August 3, 2026.

According to police, the total amount allegedly obtained from the victim through the scam was Rs. 6,644,000.

The suspect was produced before the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court today (04), while further investigations are underway. (Newswire)
