Wildlife officials have provided medical treatment to a female wild elephant that sustained gunshot wounds to both of her front legs near the Hurulu Wewa tank bund.
According to the Department of Wildlife Conservation, veterinarians from the Pandulagama Wildlife Veterinary Unit treated the elephant on Friday after receiving information from wildlife officers attached to the Moragoda Beat Office.
Officials said the elephant’s calf refused to leave its mother’s side during the operation. As a result, the calf was also tranquillised and safely secured to a tree to enable veterinarians to treat the injured elephant.
The Department said the female elephant will continue to receive the necessary medical care in the coming days, the Department said. (Newswire)
